My report card of early school days

Today I happen to look at my old documents and found the report card of my early school days. Having switched later to an alternative education, this marking system felt restrictive. To be able to now view this card from an objective point of view, I feel the need of daily evaluation in the conventional system of education and the need of self assessment by the students who would be encouraged to be descriptive in explaining what one has found interesting and practically implemented the learnings in each subject. Then even years later that same score card would evoke more emotions and show the reflections of one's early self. Just the numbers on the report card are not enough.

The constructive evaluation would be possible when there is one to one consultation with the student and in the process teachers should make the student aware of the small steps he/she can take to improve oneself. The present marking system in the conventional setups is often concentrated on the exam days which usually fall in the middle of the year and at the end of the year. Can we together think of a smooth journey of learning for students to grow integrally rather than depending on the marking system which could be the major roadblock in some cases?

Games played in a team are fun. Each one contributes whichever way one can and the entire team rejoices for being able to score goals collectively. And the team members who lose discuss where they went wrong and encourage one another to do well next time. The qualities that are developed in such fun process includes team management skills, conflict resolution skills, time management, leadership skills and decision making abilities. The games could range from solving sudokus, or discussing case studies to playing football, hockey, volleyball and softball.

There's a need to incorporate more of field trips, team games, programs, discussions and introspection in the conventional setups of learning. Students should be aware that all is done for their personal growth and their schooling will help the country and the world to develop positively.

The conventional education system should mould itself to the requirements of the students. It should take constant feedback and when the students look forward to going to school, the system will know it's progressing on the right path. It would be interesting to have many 'students' driven learning setups'!
