'Think Global Eat Local' - GLOCEL

 


Solitude Farm in Auroville seems like an apt example of GLOCEL.

As I walked through the entrance of the farm, there were several boards representing the thoughts of Masanobu Fukuoka.


 


 

Masanobu Fukuoka, who developed the ideas of Natural farming and permaculture, inspired the Aurovillian Krishna McKenzie to make the community grow and value the local food. If we grow a vegetable in our gardens and consume it - it's such an amazing feeling; a way to develop our relationship with the mother nature. (I experienced it when I once had lauki (bottle gourd) grown in my terrace)

 


 

 

Masanobu Fukuoka writes in his book 'The One-Straw Revolution', "Natural farming has become the rage. Journalists, professors and technical researchers are flocking to visit my fields and huts. Different people see it from different points of view. Make their own interpretations and then leave. One sees it as primitive, another as backward, someone else considers it the pinnacle of agricultural change and the fourth hails it as the breakthrough into the future." 

 

Krishna, in Solitude farm, spreads the ideas of natural farming (returning to the nature) through farm tour, permaculture workshops, 'wholesome' basket services and soap making workshops. 

 

The Café is the place everyone looks forward to as it is the end result of all the hard work. When I visited it, the lunch was ready to be served. One feels so connected with the food as it is a spontaneous exercise to sit at the café and think of the entire journey of the fruits and vegetables been grown locally in the farm. 



Towards the end of the book 'The One-Straw Revolution', Fukuoka writes, "The ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops but the cultivation and perfection of human beings."
